Bud break is one of the most hopeful moments in a vineyard’s year. After months of dormancy, tiny buds emerge on the vines, signalling the start of a new growing season. At Nostalgia Wines on the Black Sage Bench, that fresh energy will be on full display during their Bud Break Festival, happening Saturday, May 10 from 12 to 5 p.m.
Rooted just south of Oliver, Nostalgia’s estate vineyards are home to a mix of classic grape varietals—Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Viognier among them—grown in the sun-drenched soils of the South Okanagan. The winery is known for producing rich reds and aromatic whites with a splash of retro charm, and this new spring event offers a laid-back way to sample both.
A highlight of the day will be the cheekily named “Mom”osa bar—a build-your-own sparkling wine station with fresh juices and garnishes. It’s a nod to the Mother’s Day weekend. The experience invites guests to raise a glass to the moms in their lives, or simply enjoy a fizzy start to patio season.
Adding to the fun, wine slushies will be served—yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like: chilled, fruit-forward blends of wine and ice, made for sipping in the sunshine. Firehall Brewery will be on hand with craft beers, while local food trucks Pit Stop Smokery and Krusty Joe’s Pizza offer bites to match the beverages. Live music from Toonmade brings energy to the picnic-style setting.
Admission is by donation to the Oliver Food Bank, with non-perishable items encouraged. With the vines waking up and the season shifting toward warmth, Nostalgia’s Bud Break Festival is a welcome sign of things to come—one sip at a time.
